In this article we will address a common issue when using a proxy. If your proxy server is refusing connections, you need to follow the steps below, to figure it out yourself.
You may encounter this problem working through a proxy: proxy server is refusing connections. You can see this pop-up message in your browser. For example, in Mozilla Firefox, the error message looks like this
This might happen because of the following reasons:
- A shortcut was accidentally pressed, leading to a reset of the settings;
- Sudden shutdown of the computer, which messed up settings;
- Malware impact on the operating system or consequences of the already deleted software.
The reasons may be very different, but the main question is: what am I supposed to do now? How to fix the problem? There are several common tips that will help you to return the proxy back to work. At least they will make sure that the problem is not on your side.
Restoring connection to the proxy
So, if you find the problem with your proxy server described above, then in most cases you just need to do some simple things:
The steps for restoring the connection:
Clearing browser cache
The first thing after failing to establish connection to the proxy server is to clear the cache and browser history. Generally, this procedure is recommended when you encounter any problem in your browser. Just in case, so to speak.
Clearing the cache for all browsers is approximately the same, let's take Google Chrome for example.
Open browsing history. From the main menu or with Ctrl + H shortcut . Chrome browsing history will open, where you need to select "Clear history".
This is where you can configure options for deleting data about your online activities. First of all, it is recommended to configure the time range for which you want to clear your browser history. It is best to select "All time" for full cleaning.
The next step is to choose what data you want to delete from the history. There are tabs for basic and advanced settings. If you are not sure which data to delete and which to keep, just leave the default settings. Then all three items "browsing history", "cookies and other site data" and "Images and other files stored in the cache" will be selected.
After that, you will only have to click "Delete data" and wait a bit until all this information is deleted and you can go to the next item on the way to restore access to the proxy.
Manual proxy setup
Clearing the cache is only a preparatory step, now let's move on to the proxy setup. Incorrect or messed up settings are most often the reason of failed connections.
We will briefly list here only the basic steps of manual proxy server setup. A detailed article about Windows 10 proxy setup can be found here Notice that the article suggests two ways to configure the proxy, the second method is suitable even for earlier versions of Windows.
Basically the process of a proxy server configuration can be divided into three main stages:
- Opening the proxy server settings
- Configuring and saving proxy settings
- Authorization configuration
Opening the proxy server settings
You can enter proxy settings in different ways, depending on the operating system you are using and the software that is used to configure the connection to the proxy server. For example, in the case of Windows 10, the path looks like this: Start → Settings → Network and Internet → Proxy server.
Usually to set up a proxy you simply need to enter its IP address and port in the field as well as choose a preferable protocol and then save it. Additionally, using software such as Proxifier, you may need or want to enter proxy's login and password.
Proxy authorization depends on the type of proxy and its settings. If you use a free public proxy, then you can skip it. If you use a private proxy server, you need to specify which authorization method is available for your proxy.
Malware system check
Problems with Internet access might appear as a result of malware. Therefore, to exclude this point from the list of possible reasons, you need to check your computer for malicious software.
We advise to check the system with an antivirus that is different from the one that you already have installed. This can be done, for example, with the help of free antivirus software that allows you to scan your computer for free. Such malware scanners are offered free of charge by most major antivirus developers. You can easily find them on the Internet
In case of detection of malware on your computer, you need to take additional measures to improve the security of personal data to prevent re-infection.
Windows Registry cleaning
If the methods above do not solve the problem with proxy connection, you should try to clear the registry. Cleaning is done in a few steps.
Step 1 Open the Run dialog window and enter command regedit to open the registry editor.
Step 2. In the registry editor field, find the partition you want to edit along the path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
Step 3 In the result folder find the file named Appinit_DLLs (for Windows 10-AutoAdminLogan) and completely clear its contents. If this file was already empty, then no operation is required.
Step 4. Close the registry editor and restart the computer.
It is also possible to clean the registry with the help of specialized software, such as CCleaner.
If after all the steps done, the proxy still doesn't seem to work, and you need access to the Internet as quickly as possible, then there is always a possibility to simply disable the proxy server and go online just like that. A more detailed description is here
If nothing helps
Disabling the proxy is not a preferable option though. However if the proxy is still refusing connection after all the operations, it makes sense to do the following:
- Disable VPN connections and all in-browser add-ons as some browsers come with their own anonymizers or VPN;
- Check up your Internet connection directly, without using a proxy;
- Make sure the proxy is actually up. This can be done in Proxifier or in our proxy checker If your proxy does not work, please contact support. If you use a free public proxy, try to find a new one.
- You might as well reinstall the operating system if everything really went wrong But this the last stand! Do it only when all hope is gone.
The methods described in this article will help you with configuring a proxy in most cases. If the problem persists, it is best to seek help from a technician.
